In the summer of 2011, Fulham Opera staged “Das Rheingold”. Cast with some of the finest emerging Wagnerians around – the company boasts several current and former Bayreuth Bursary finalists and prizewinners – this innovative staging with piano accompaniment was something of a leap in the dark. A staggering (and to us, somewhat surprising!) audience and critical success, we toasted our triumph, and as you do, decided we couldn’t stop there. We had to do a complete Ring. Walkure followed in May 2012, Siegfried follows in February 2013, and Gotterdammerung in November 2013. We’re even planning two full cycles for the early part of 2014.
We do so much of this on a shoestring, goodwill, and with the help of our already overworked performers, who bring a portfolio of additional skills to the table. If we looked at the total sum we’d need to put this whole project on, guaranteeing a profit-share from the door for our artists, and not expecting everyone to give over most of the next two years to us for free, we’d be looking into the tens of thousands even to remain on our current shoestring. A quite frightening sum. However, we asked ourselves this question – how do you eat an elephant? And the answer came “a forkful at a time”. So we’re looking for assistance for specific areas of the project at a time.
In the short term, it would be nice to guarantee that none of our artists or small production crew have to pay for their travel over the rehearsal and performance period for Siegfried, and to pay them a nominal £10 subsistence fee for each day they’re called to rehearse. £2,000 will cover this – a relatively small sum to raise, but one that would make all the difference to us. We will be looking to fund other areas of the project in the future. If you are interested in helping us further with Siegfried, we are seeking financing from other sites similar to this – please message me for details.
